How to Retire At Any Age

One of the best things about retiring overseas is that you can do it at any age. You don’t necessarily have to wait until your Social Security payments kick in.

Of course, you’ll need a way to sustain your new life in paradise. But you do have options, especially if you’re entrepreneurially inclined. And you don’t necessarily need a regular pension or significant cash assets.

[See 10 Places to Reinvent Your Life in Retirement .]

As a citizen of the United States, you have a big advantage in the global arena. You’ve grown up in the world’s most competitive marketplace. You have watched niches filled and businesses launched and you have seen innumerable examples of entrepreneurial success and failure. You understand (even if you don’t realize it) why some businesses work and others don’t.

Now imagine yourself in a much less developed environment. Being an industrious American, you can’t help but look around and notice all kinds of market voids. And you may find yourself coming up with ideas to address them. This is what happened to Ann and Mike Kuffner, two successful 40-somethings from the San Francisco Bay area. Ann and Mike weren’t ready to retire in the conventional sense, but they were ready for a change.

[See 7 Affordable Places to Retire Abroad.]

The couple moved to Ambergris Caye, Belize, built a house, and began looking for new opportunities. They had savings and retirement funds, but, with decades of healthy living ahead of them, Ann and Mike knew they also needed an income. “We had fun kicking around ideas for businesses we might both enjoy,” Ann says. “And the better we got to know the island, the more niches we saw that needed filling.”

They considered starting a restaurant, building a small hotel, opening a wine specialty store, running eco-tours, and, finally, launching a fitness club. “This was my favorite idea because I’m a health nut,” says Ann. “Mike and I noticed right away that there weren’t any health clubs on the island.” The couple had no development experience and used their savings to finance the business. "I have to admit, I was nervous,” says Ann. “But we felt this was our time to go for it. We were both still relatively young, healthy, and energetic. It might be our last chance to take on this kind of challenge.”

[Visit the U.S. News Retirement site for more planning ideas and advice.]

Now they run the San Pedro Family Fitness Club, which has tennis courts, a 250,000 gallon pool, and a workout facility. But the couple still has plenty of time to explore their new home. “We love the small town environment here,” says Ann. “We don’t have movie theaters, galleries, and the sophisticated things you get in a big city, but the island is truly beautiful.”

How to Beat the Negative Thoughts Ruining Your Job Search

When you wake up tomorrow and smell the sweet aroma of coffee brewing and hear the clamor of the kids getting ready for school as the dog barks, and you notice the hot, sweaty stench of summer is fading fast as September begins, consider trying a new approach in your job search.

First, resolve to be a bit more thoughtful about it.

Then, spend more time than usual.  Job searching is, like, your new job.  Stats show that, on average, unemployed people actually spend less than 30 minutes a day job seeking.  Why is this?  I think it's two things: the frustration that comes with sending so many resumes and applications and having nothing to show for it; and the feeling that there are no job openings for the jobs that you want.

[See how not to use your connections to get a job.]

Think this through a bit. If you get frustrated because you never hear back from anything you send to employers, maybe something is wrong with this approach. It's possible that your resume is badly done or you have not done enough homework upfront to understand exactly what it is the employer needs from you. But let's skip the resume improvement for the time being and instead focus on the employer.

The employer will almost never tell you what they want from you. Most of the time, they don't know.  They think it is someone that is in alignment with their job description.  This is almost never true.

What they want, and this is key for  you, is someone who can solve a problem that they are having so they are more productive, efficient and effective.  They want you to contribute in a positive way to their business. The only way to discover this is to do research on the company.

[See how to turn a job application into an interview.]

If you have a sense that there might be a fit between you and this job opening, this is when the work starts.  Take the attitude that you want to find out everything you can about the job, the hiring manager and the company.  Your skill-set might not be the best now, but you will know more about this job opening than anyone else.  This takes time.  You need to read past articles, examine business journals, snoop around social media (hey, they will do this on you!), you might even want to read through some web forums, and find out where employees hang out so you can put together the fullest picture of the company and this job opening.

This might take you all morning.  But at the end of this time, you will already be able to distinguish yourself from nearly every other applicant who simply hits "apply now" on the job description.

Once all this research is complete--see, it is like a job, isn't it?--you will be able to figure out how best to approach the hiring manager and what your message will be.  More than likely, your standard resume does not look as good as it once did.  With the information you now know, you can adjust your cover letter and resume.

Now the sales job begins.  Yeah, yeah, I know you hate sales.  Make no mistake, getting hired is a sales job.  Good sales people use the exact same process to sell their product and service that you will now use to sell yourself.

Armed with more knowledge about the job than anyone else, and understanding that knowledge is the key to presenting yourself in a better manner, you can be positive that you will get more positive responses.

I am positive.

B-School, Day One: A Primer

B-School, Day One: A Primer

The first day of B-school is a nerve-wracking time, but a few simple rules can help new MBA students get through it with flying colors

By Sommer Saadi

(Corrects the graduation year of Chris Granger.)

Nearly three years out of school and Brock Rasmussen forgot what it was like to be a student: homework every night, running on four hours of sleep, and prepping for the first major exam only two weeks after starting classes. During his first days as an MBA student at Duke's Fuqua School of Business (Fuqua Full-Time MBA Profile) he was overwhelmed.

"I was blown away and wondered what I had gotten myself into," Rasmussen says. "Maybe I wasn't ready for this program, and maybe an MBA wasn't what I was cut out for."

Or maybe, he later realized, it was all part of the business school experience.

"The program has a goal of breaking you down so that it can build you back up," he says. During the rebuilding, Rasmussen learned to take every problem head on by first asking, "what am I trying to accomplish?"—then stepping back and creating a plan of action. It's a lesson he carries with him today as he finishes up Fuqua's Cross Continent MBA program and works as chief financial officer at the Foot & Ankle Institute in St. George, Utah.

For students starting an MBA program this fall, Rasmussen says it's a good idea to step back and ask what are you trying to accomplish. And when putting together a plan of action for a successful experience, it's helpful to know the lessons learned by students who made it out successfully. So we asked alumni from several top MBA programs to share their advice on making the most of the first days of business school.

MEET EVERYONE IN YOUR PROGRAM

Alumni cannot stress enough how important colleagues are to the MBA experience. Heather Zorn, a 2005 graduate of the Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business (Mendoza Full-Time MBA Profile), created a network of people all over the world whom she can contact for everything from travel advice to job opportunities.

She met a friend who became so close he asked her to be godmother to his son. Another friend she met during orientation traveled with Zorn across India. And one of the women she met during the first week of school she later recruited to work at her current company, Amazon.com (AMZN), where Zorn's a senior manager. Your colleagues at school could easily be, and quite often are, co-workers and business partners after graduation, Zorn says.

Nate Challen, a 2008 MBA graduate of the Kenan-Flagler Business School (Kenan-Flagler Full-Time MBA Profile) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, suggests asking what your classmates were doing before school, because their past experiences could influence your present experience at school.

Challen, now a brand manager for Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), had a good friend who chose Kenan-Flagler specifically to pursue a job in strategy consulting. But after discussing another student's Wall Street career over buffalo wings one night during orientation, Challen's friend shifted his focus to sales and trading. If he didn't have that conversation, he might not have attended a banking presentation and would have never been exposed to the career path that made him happiest, Challen said.

Sloan School of Management

The consistently top-ranked MBA program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management began life in 1914 as, of all things, an engineering course, and the engineering mind-set still permeates the campus in Cambridge, Mass.

Sloan today is well-known for the academic rigor of its many programs, which include a full-time MBA program with a recently revamped curriculum and an executive MBA; master's programs in finance and management; joint programs with the MIT School of Engineering and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology; plus PhD and unndergraduate programs.

Since its founding, the Sloan School has focused on providing students with the must-know operational tools to be successful in their fields—in a setting on the banks of the Charles River that makes the entire experience worth the price tag.

"If you're going to business school to check a box and go back to your old investment bank, you may not fit in," says one student in a survey conducted by Bloomberg Businessweek. "MIT Sloan is a school of brilliant, energetic, self-motivated, and ultimately humble students who are genuinely interested in leveraging their MBA experience to accomplish their diverse long-term goals."
